Hi! I'm Sierra the Barefoot Girl! I'm just your average Canadian girl... Your average Canadian barefoot girl, that is. I recently moved to the big city from the farm I spent my childhood on. Everyone in my small town expected me to be barefoot. That's just how I always was. They weren't even phased when I performed in a rodeo while barefoot. But this is a new life for me in a town full of people I have never met. My work transferred me to a new location, only 20 minutes away from where my parents live. For the time being, I'll be living with them, sleeping on a blow-up mattress in the extra bedroom. Join me on my adventures as I adjust to my new life in the city and adapt my barefoot lifestyle to the challenges it will bring!
Less than 24 hours into my new life as a city girl, I was itching to get out of my house. It was full of unfamiliar sounds and surrounded by people I didn't know. Also, there was no food. I hopped in my van and drove to the nearest grocery store. I navigated the aisles slowly, aware that everyone was staring at my bare feet, but too timid to pull out my camera and document it proudly. Not until safely outside did I finally overcome my fears and photograph my own footprint in the snow. I had successfully navigated the grocery store and parking lot without anyone approaching me to tell me to put shoes on. In fact, I managed to go the whole day without a word about my barefoot ways. When my brother got home from school, I was still itching to get out of the new and weird house, so we went to the park. He was concerned that I would get frostbite, so he made me take snow boots, but no need arose to actually put them on. Video of me walking barefoot in the park It was bitterly cold, well below freezing, but our walk to the playground and the vigorous swinging kept us warm for a long while. We played for what felt like only minutes, but was actually closer to a few hours. We finally decided it was time to go home when neither of us could feel our fingers any longer. With fears of frostbite in the forefront of our minds, we hurried home. Luckily, we got home before frostbite was able to set in, but next time we'll pay attention to how long we're out there, just to be on the safe side. We thawed out over steaming mugs of tea while I helped him with his homework. Around 8:00, he realized that he had left one of his assignments in his locker. We drove back to his school to retrieve it. When we arrived and entered, a sign in the hallway read "Please remove outdoor shoes and boots." I was so angry with myself for forgetting to bring my camera to document this socially sanctioned barefooting! I made my brother promise to take a picture of it when he went to school the next day. Hopefully he will remember! Update: Here's the socially sanctioned barefooting sign from my brother's school! Become a fan of me on facebook!
